The underwater nodes aren't accessible to new players since the hand drill does not work for mining iron underwater, BUT there are 2 nodes just inside the cave, (to the right of the door) that are sticking out of the water enough to harvest them with a hammer or obsidian pick. If you did the tutorial at all, it points out the small cave, (directly south from the 'bed tutorial' which has the underwater iron nodes. On the starting island, there is a iron deposit and small vein in the cave where you place a fish.

I also think, Casava is now a fully extinct plant as I lost the last 3 roots at sea. Fully extinct all my goat and Rabbit population on my first voyage. I tried to look for a iron pickaxe that would have been left by some great explorer before me and I explored my Islands to the fullest. I found some in the Far east, but cant mine them as I need that starting pickaxe.
